Scientists have long been concerned with the question: how to improve the quality of our lives? To find the answer, they watched people from different social classes. Studies have confirmed that happiness depends not on the starting conditions, and habits, which change for each.
AdMe.ru made a list of simple but important steps to a prosperous life, which can be enjoyed today.
Step 1. Pay attention to what and how we eat
Health is an important component of happiness, a lot of it is determined by what we eat. Financial expert Thomas Corley (Thomas C. Corley) says that 97 % of people with low incomes consume more than 300 calories in the form of fast food every day, medical studies confirm that poor nutrition may lead to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
However, Sarah hill (Sarah E. Hill), psychologist at Texas Christian University, is sure that with the proper willpower anyone can change their eating habits. Healthy eating isn’t a luxury, as we think (though it requires a more conscious approach). For starters, you can add in your diet with more colorful vegetables and to abandon the fast food in favor of meals prepared at home.
Step 2. To put the relationship in priority
Psychologists Justin Brienza (Justin Brienza) and Igor Grossman say: people with high income less likely to admit they were wrong and try to look at the situation from different points of view. People from the lower class, in contrast, often go for a compromise, trying to solve the conflicts and put in priority your relationships with other people, not personal achievements.
It is important not to forget that all three of these qualities are very important for any long and harmonious relationship. Because in the end, it is the warmth and closeness that make us truly happy. However you need to remember that everything needs balance to be happy in a relationship, you need to learn to listen to yourself and say “no” to what is unacceptable to us.
Step 3. To avoid stress, to help your brain
Scientists from Cornell University proved that chronic stress changes the structure of the brain, reducing the strength of will and impairing memory. Those who are constantly exposed to stress, worse learn and remember new information, and it is more difficult to make decisions and to postpone immediate pleasure for the sake of larger goals. But psychologists and neuroscientists from the University of California in San Francisco found that stress accelerates the aging process in women.
What should I do? First, the psychologists claim that we can significantly reduce the negative impact of stress on our lives. A good initial vector — to move more, try less to worry about things beyond our control, to enjoy pleasant things and more to listen to yourself. Second, even long-term effects of stress are reversible. Low level of self-control and discipline is not a sentence for life — these skills can be trained.
Step 4. To acquire good habits and extend their life
According to statistics, rich people are sick less often and live longer. It would seem that everything is simple: they have access to elite medicine. However, according to the American organization of The Health Inequality Project, the life expectancy depends not only on the income level and quality of medical services as from our harmful and useful habits.
To significantly extend life and improve health, the researchers recommend exercise regularly, drink sufficient amount of plain clear water and to stop Smoking.
Step 5. To be kinder to others
Wealthy people often “cut” with other cars on the roads and less likely to pass pedestrians, found by social psychologists from the University of California at Berkeley. Of course, scientists make a reservation that in any social class meet their selfish and altruistic, but the statistics shows that representatives of the upper class behave unethically in 3-4 times more often. Maybe it’s the detachment from the world and habit to pursue primarily their own interests.
As shown by other studies, it is a good attitude, empathy and helping other people can give us a sense of deep and lasting joy and meaning in life. Even such things as hold the door for the stranger, to thank the bus driver, look in the eyes of the companion and smile getting warmer all.
Step 6. To shop more consciously
The author of the books, millionaire Steve Siebold (Steve Siebold) and Thomas Corley has long been studying the financial habits of the rich and the poor, who are not always logical. For example, if you select the Internet service provider of the person with a low income were more likely to pay attention to the cheapest option, which would have to update several times. This includes the habit of buying cheap clothing and equipment of low quality. As a result, these habits lead to big expenses, after all, a quality item will last longer and more lucrative contract can save you in the long term.
Step 7. Select the circle
When Thomas Corley was collecting material for the book “Change your habits — change your life”, he found that the rich choose more carefully the social circle: this is usually proactive, determined, successful people, which lead them to step out of the comfort zone and develop. Poor people also generally choose their friends, bosses and partner unconsciously — among those with whom they communicate easily.
There is the Golden mean — to maintain good relations with important people to limit contact with those who are behaving is unacceptable to us, and be sure to include in your circle of people to whom we would like to be like.
Step 8. To try alternative modes of transport
According to the census Bureau United States, the poorest, and the richest, are more likely to choose more environmentally friendly transportation, getting to work on foot or by bike. For the first is the need for a second — a conscious decision in favor of health and environment. People with average incomes, as a rule, travel by private car and taxi, and spend a considerable part of the budget.
The group of researchers from the University of Michigan, and other colleagues, found a direct link between exercise and happiness. Every week we spend on the road for several hours. So maybe it’s a good idea — at least from time to time to change four wheels for two and at the same time to get a little happier?
We loved the idea of colorful vegetables — it’s easy and fun. What do you think, how realistic is it to change your habits? Which one inspired you the most?
