How to start drawing, if you’ve never done this before

Never too late to start, if you have the desire to paint and the willingness to practice regularly.

I’m sure to start drawing at any age. I became fascinated with art after school. For a person who wanted to draw, there are two ways. The first is to take paint and just start: don’t delve into the theory, not to think about the rules, just follow your inner impulse. The second is to go to school.

Where to start, what to read, where to study

Here are a few ideas.

  • Sign up for any group course for adults or go to an art party.
  • If you are a fan of video tutorials, here is a popular channel professional artist Anastasia, Shimshilashvili — Art Shima. Or channel which is called “How to learn to draw” where you lay out the lessons on drawing in different styles, different methods and tools.
  • From my favorite books — “the picture. Fundamentals of educational academic drawing” Nicholas Lee.
  • Find the artist, whose work is very close and interesting chat with him or even take a lesson. Fortunately the Internet allows you to contact anyone.

Which technique to choose

I don’t think at first it is necessary to limit itself in the selection of painting techniques. What will you choose, traditional art or digital, sketchbook and pencils or a tablet, depends on your personal preference. The market demand for both. They are different tools, they can and should learn, to the same rules of perspective, composition, proportions, chromatics alone.

And to understand, whether you want to make art, like a technique or another, and would you do a drawing, — to try.

Something to be inspired

To be inspired not necessarily only artwork. I find Muse in design, fashion, tattoo. Each sphere has its own masterminds. For example, I like the tattoo artist Andrey Volkov and project “Master painter” Radik Musin. Also note the clothing brand Bevza and submission of collections in the social networks.

Read books, go to museums, see movies, listen to music — you never know what will eventually become the impetus for the creation of the project.

Is it possible to achieve anything without education

It all depends on your goals.

If you want to realize their creative needs, to show family and friends that you are a creative personality to fulfill an old dream, we don’t need no education.

If you have a goal to become a professional, commercially successful artist, then sooner or later you will most probably need to obtain theoretical knowledge and develop skills. It is necessary at least to improve the technical level and quality of execution of orders.

On the other hand, looking at the “Black square” by Malevich, it may seem that this is all that capable author. However, Malevich was a professional artist and influential art theorist, wrote of the painting in different techniques. Comes out unprepared public your education can be imperceptible.

Rules for each day

  • The most important rule of the artist, in my opinion, is the practice every day, at least at the stage of learning. I and a notice that after a long break is very difficult to start, if you have to re-learn, the skill is lost. Hand if forget the fact that until recently was given with ease.
  • Outline where ever you go. Even if you’re short on time, carry a sketchbook to draw everything I see. It can be figures of people, streets, lights… Sketches develop fine eye and trained hand. And later they can be useful to plot a full picture.
  • Try something new. In the process of learning don’t stay on one story or material. Try different techniques and materials, it will help you to form your own style.
  • It may sound trite, but it is very important to be interested in art. Broaden your horizons, see paintings by different artists, learn how and why they created their work. I’m sure it’s invaluable and exciting experience for any budding artist.
  • Don’t be afraid of feedback. You can upload your creations to social networks, but I think that feedback is best to personally at the shows. Display your work and communicate with people, listen to criticism. In the end, it will help you to become better. Do not have to start with the larger galleries: organize a jam session, only for their own, invite friends and loved ones.
  • If you imagine a successful modern artist, I would describe him as a charismatic, bright personality with good technical skills and ideally, also with a commercial vein. But each artist has his own way. Someone bright person, someone of master of landscape-painting, and someone can sell a canvas with a “spit” of paint. It is this diversity that makes the art world so interesting. And I truly believe that each of us has its own audience, you just need to find.
